Then read on. I have lots of unfocused waffle for you. Web news first. I know I said that the Simplified Standards site would launch around about now, but owing to work/life commitments, I’m gonna have to put it on the shelf for a month or three.
Worry not though, as the passion is still there, and a great number of trusted souls have pledged to help shape the site when the time comes. Anyway, we can remain upbeat with all the new WaSP initiatives on the go, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who is aware of the mighty Faruk’s forthcoming standards and accessibility project which will doubtless launch long before mine. Oh, and finally, don’t get too excited about IE7 (hey, it’s only beta, kids).
There’s more news, but it’s a bit sporadic, so read on only if you’re stuck under a sleeping cat, or find that your web connection has gone down and this is the only page you got…
For two days I have had an irrepressable migraine that’s forced me off work. I never used to get them, and it has to be something to do with computer screens. Before 2000 I never had much more than a hangover, but since buying a computer later that year, the occasional headaches have worsened and now - probably every two months - I get mental headaches and crazy blindspots in my vision. It’s crap, and I don’t recommend it. I even missed a gig I’d been looking forward to because of it. That really sucks. “Sucks”? Am I American now?. Whoa.
Yes, I’m moving house. Except, I’m not. Confused? I am. I’ve lived in the same house for three years, and with Emma moving up to Nottingham we’d planned to make a fresh start and find a new place. However, we’ve decided to remain here, but it’s a bit odd. See, I’d already packed everything, ready for another move, and now I’m slowly unpacking it all again - and everything is going into different places. I’ve also moved bedrooms, I’m redecorating, all the kitchen utensils and food have been re-imagineered into different cupboards (I can’t find a fucking thing), and I no longer have an amplifier. The walls are soon to be painted mushroom, pebble or some other manicly unmanic shades, and generally the whole place is gonna feel completely different. And do you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way…
G4 laptops don’t last forever, kids. Anyone following this ongoing saga of decay and despair will not be surprised to read that the screen has all but fell off now. One hinge is somehow managing to take most of the weight, but it’s very alarming to have a sliding lid, with very frail wires sticking out of one side. I’m only hoping the laptop goes out in poetic glory like Rutger Hauer in Bladerunner and not like Anakin Skywalker in Revenge of the Sith (in a blaze of amputation and flames). Keep going baby, you have to. There’s no replacement…
I’m involved with two forthcoming webby, “won’t impress the parents or girlfriend” books for Friends Of ED now. I’ll be sure to spin more info your way when I can, but I’m very excited about both of them. One is taking aaages to pull together, but it’ll be worth it. The other will see me enter stage left after the real author has done all of the hard work, and you’ll all witness me plagiarising his ideas through an entire tutorial. It’ll be great fun.
Sorry. And you were just getting into it weren’t you? One day, I’ll write my autobiography and you can delve in until my tales of glory fill your breathing pipes with chlorinous jealousy/trivia. For now, you’ll have to wait.
Where are my bloody Nurofen?

Honestly Colly, I haven’t even announced the project myself yet, how would Anyone know? :-) Except for the small selection I’ve contacted privately about it, yourself included.
I am, however, going to announce it soon. I’m just awaiting one last response from the W3C before doing so.

My G3 had the metal bits inside the hinges snap, giving it absolutely no support, so we ended up taking a cardboard box that was big enough to hold the G3 in, cutting out a hole for any necessary wires, and making it into a sort of screen supporter (we called it the Speckcave, ‘cause the computer’s named Speck, and we’re nerds).
It worked out really well, supporting the screen up so that the computer could still be used and blocking light from hitting the screen and making it unreadable.
However, it did mean that the computer really couldn’t travel. But if it’s staying at home, then you don’t have to worry — just make a little box-cave for it and it does fine.
(and if all this makes sense, I’ll be really surprised, because I have an incoming cold…)

My tips for Migraines - don’t get too used to pills, they make it worse in time and drink loads of water!!
